Officially introduce in China at the end of October, Apple’s iPhone has been sold by China Unicom in more than 100,000 units.
That’s not a bad number when you first look at it, but China Unicom has more than 140 million customers, which means that only about 0.07% of them wanted (and could afford) the iPhone.
By comparison, China Unicom (South Korea’s second largest carrier with about 14 million users) said that it received 60,000 iPhone pre-orders before the smartphone’s launch.
China Unicom is offering both the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS to its customers. They are sold without Wi-Fi, unlike the iPhones you can find on the Chinese grey market – and that’s certainly one of the reasons the carrier sold only 100,000 units until now (despite calling the smartphone a “great success”).

It’s estimated that 1 million iPhones were already sold in China before its official release.
