Salam, I figure a dedicated topic for the collection of religious apps is needed. So to start the ball rolling here goes…

From my experience trying to install a working app in my N6600, the cracked version of the popular prayer alarm/qibla dir app ALMOAZEN by Globesoft is very unstable, either you cannot change the home city or if you add a new one, the rest of the cities became somewhat unusable.

So, I searched and found a freeware called “mAthan for series 60″. The setback is there is only a handful of a feature though. Only a few cities are available (but some tweaking can improve on that, read more below). Prayer times are not as accurate as Almoazen by a few minutes for a few prayers (maybe Fajr and Asr) and there’s no qibla direction (but a separate app in my next post can solve that, look below). But it worked flawlessly in my N6600 & N3650 and you can download it FREE from:

HOW TO ADD AN UNLISTED CITY:
1. Using any file explorer (not the basic Nokia file mngr) from the “mAthan” working directory in your phone (C: or E:SystemAppsathan), copy to your pc (easier to edit) a file named “athan.dat”. You can use windows “Notepad” to edit (if no “open with “ option appear when you right-click, press “shift” while right-clicking on the file and you get to choose and app to open the file with, choose “Notepad”).

2. You will see a list of settings of every city listed in the app that look like this:
and there a few with “cm” values which we will ignore at this moment.

3. Apart from the location name, lad=latitude degree, lam=latitude minute, las=whether N or S (0 is north, 1 is south), lnd=longitude degree, lnm=longitude minute, lnw=whether W or E (0 is east, 1 is west), tz=timezone (MUST NOT be a negative value, even if you live in New York where the GMT timezone is actually “-5”, it should be entered as “5”).

4. So, if “Medan, North Sumatera , Indonesia” is 3.58 N 98.67 E, timezone is GMT+7 hrs (you can find the lat/long+timezone info in many sites in the web but I’d recommend: http://www.islamicfinder.org ). The line should look like this:

5. Save the file and replace the one in the phone (make sure the “mAthan” app is not open and backup the original file first by renaming “athan.bak” or something).

6. When you open “mAthan”, you will find the new location in the app setting.

7. Okay, FINALLY for the uninitiated/or simply lazy to read my long instructions, maybe I can upload in my next post the tweaked “athan.dat” file but I will only do that if there’s so many request. Please post your location (complete info: city, state, country) for accurate setting.
